La cavernomatosis múltiple familiar es una rara entidad asociada a una mutación en el gen KRIT1 en el cromosoma 7q21-q22 ( CCM 1). Otras dos formas CCM 2 y 3 tambien se asocian a mutaciones en ese cromosoma ( OMIN). Cuando se realiza un escrrening en sujetos con cavernomatosis múltiple se encuentra una mutacion en el 29% de los sujetos (Verlaan) ,mientras que este escreening es negativo en los sujetos con cavernomas aislados ( la mayoria).
